Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If your Atlas roof system has a failing underlayment or a soft section of decking, we stock Atlas-compatible underlayment and decking material on our trucks and typically complete most repairs in Houston for $450 – $1,400 installed, depending on how many squares of underlayment need replacing and how much deck sheathing has rotted. You’ll know the price before we touch the roof. Most Houston homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a ceiling stain after a heavy downpour, granules in the gutter after a windstorm, or a soft spot felt underfoot during a gutter cleaning. The underlayment is the waterproof layer between your Atlas shingles or tiles and the plywood deck beneath, and when it fails, the deck is next.

Which Atlas Models This Applies To

Underlayment and decking are not shingle-specific, so this work applies across the Atlas product line we install and repair: Pinnacle Pristine, StormMaster Shake, StormMaster Slate, and the glass-reinforced WeatherMaster lines. Atlas manufactures its own underlayment products, including Summit Synthetic and the peel-and-stick WeatherMaster Ice & Water Shield, which we stock and install as the OEM pairing for Atlas roof systems. Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Houston homeowners don’t know: Atlas’s synthetic underlayment is 48 inches wide, not the 36-inch width common on older felt products, so a patch job with the wrong roll leaves a seam exactly where water wants to travel. We match the width to what’s already on the roof and check the exposure rating against the slope of your Houston roof, which matters on lower-pitch ranch homes where water lingers. For decking, we prefer CDX plywood or OSB rated for the local wind uplift requirements, and we’ll match the thickness to the existing deck rather than forcing a mismatched sheet that telegraphs through the shingles. If the label on your underlayment is still readable, we can identify the exact product; if it’s crumbling, we default to the Atlas-spec product for your shingle line. We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with Atlas, but we stock their materials because we trust the product pairing.

Signs Your Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Ceiling stains or drips inside the house. This means water has already passed through the underlayment and the deck. The underlayment is saturated, and the deck below is likely starting to rot.
  • Visible daylight in the attic. If you can see pinpoints of light through the roof boards from inside the attic, the underlayment is torn or gone and the deck may have gaps. Rain follows that light.
  • Soft spots when walking the roof. A spongy feeling underfoot means the plywood or OSB has absorbed water and lost its structural strength. This is a deck replacement, not a patch.
  • Shingles lifting or blowing off in Houston’s spring storms. When the underlayment degrades, shingles lose their secondary water barrier, and high wind finds the weak point. You’ll see curled or missing shingles first, but the failure starts underneath.
  • Damp, musty smell in the attic after rain. That smell is trapped moisture in the decking and insulation. By the time you smell it, the deck has been wet for weeks and mold is likely present.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, most Atlas underlayment replacement runs $450 – $900 installed for a typical single-story home section, and deck repair adds $6 – $9 per square foot depending on how many sheets come out. Here’s the breakdown: synthetic underlayment is around $90 – $140 per 1,000 square feet of material alone, but labor, tear-off of the old layer, and fasteners drive the installed price. A full deck sheet replacement on a small Houston ranch section typically runs $400 – $700 including the plywood, nails, and our time. What you get with our price: the old underlayment or decking removed and hauled off, the new material installed to Atlas spec, the shingles re-installed and sealed, and a written line-item price before any work starts. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a year, we return and make it right at no charge. The Kingswell Way is simple: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails. Greg Holloway walks every underlayment and deck job himself and writes the estimate in plain English.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect a few things yourself: look for lifted shingles from the ground, check the attic for daylight pinholes, and run your hand across the underside of the deck boards after a rain to feel for dampness. What we don’t recommend is pulling shingles and laying new underlayment as a weekend project. The danger here is not springs or electricity, it’s penetrations: every nail you pull and re-drive on a Houston roof is a new hole that has to be sealed correctly against our rainfall, and a single missed seam means the whole section leaks again. We’ve also seen more than a few homeowners patch decking with the wrong thickness and create a low spot that holds water. The material is forgiving; the details are not. If you want to walk the roof yourself, we’ll tell you what to look for over the phone. If you want it fixed, call us at (254) 566-3573 and we’ll schedule the free estimate.
