CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent systems across Houston, including the Rapid Ridge and FilterVent lines, with most full installations running $650 to $1,400 depending on the ridge length and roof pitch. You’ll get a written price before we touch the roof, and in most cases we can complete the job the same week you call. Most owners discover their ridge vent has failed when they climb into the attic on a July afternoon, feel the air hanging hot and dead, and notice water staining along the ridge line from a cracked vent channel.

Houston heat does a number on roof plastics. UV exposure and attic temperatures that routinely clear 140°F bake ridge vent material until it turns brittle, cracks, or warps out of its mounting track. The failure usually isn’t dramatic. It’s slow. You notice a bump in the cooling bill, then a damp spot on the attic floor after a hard rain, and by the time you’re up on a ladder, the vent lip has pulled loose from the shingles. That’s the moment to fix it, not wait.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes three ridge vent systems you’ll find on Houston homes: Rapid Ridge (their most common, a rigid vent with an external baffle), FilterVent (a flexible, rolled vent with a built-in filter), and Venturis (a hybrid with an external wind baffle). Each installs differently, and the critical thing is that the replacement vent matches the manufacturer’s nail slot spacing and cap shingle depth. If you pull the old vent and the new one doesn’t seat the same way, you’ll get shingle lift, water intrusion, and a warranty that means nothing.
Independent from CertainTeed, we’re a local Houston roofing company that happens to work with their products alongside six other manufacturers. When a homeowner hands us a CertainTeed vent, we check two things before ordering: the vent’s product code printed on the underside of an uncracked section, and the roof’s measured ridge length. CertainTeed vents are designed for specific shingle exposures, and pairing a Rapid Ridge with the wrong cap shingle is a compatibility gotcha most people never see coming. For most Houston roofs, the OEM CertainTeed vent is the right call, but if the home has an older CertainTeed dimension shingle that’s been discontinued, we’ll walk you through an aftermarket equivalent that actually fits.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic temperature keeps climbing. The vent’s whole job is to pull hot air out along the ridge. When the channel cracks or the baffle detaches, that hot air sits in the attic and your AC runs harder. It’s not a subtle feeling in Houston in August.
- Water stains along the attic ridge board. A cracked vent channel lets driven rain in at the exact worst place: the top of the roof. Water that enters at the ridge runs down rafters and shows up as dark streaks on the underside of the decking.
- Visible cracking or curling of the vent material. Stand back from the street and look at the ridge line. If the vent looks sunken, wavy, or you can see gaps where it should sit tight against the shingles, the plastic has lost its shape.
- Shingle granule buildup in the gutters at the ridge line. When a ridge vent fails, the cap shingles above it often go with it. You’ll see granules washing down the roof slope directly under the ridge.
- Drafty or musty smell in the attic after rain. That’s moisture that entered at the ridge and hasn’t dried. In Houston’s humidity, it doesn’t take long for that to become a mold conversation.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a full CertainTeed ridge vent replacement on a typical ranch or two-story home runs $650 to $1,400 installed. That includes removing the old vent, inspecting the ridge decking and cap shingles for damage, installing the new vent system with proper fastener spacing, and replacing any cap shingles that didn’t survive the original failure. The price moves based on three things: linear feet of ridge line, roof pitch (steeper roofs cost more in labor), and whether the cap shingles need replacing.
Here’s how that breaks down in the real Houston market:
- Ridge vent material (CertainTeed or equivalent): $4 to $8 per linear foot
- Labor, including removal of the old vent: $3 to $7 per linear foot
- Cap shingle replacement (if needed): $150 to $400 depending on ridge length
- Ridge board repair (if water damage found): $200 to $600 depending on extent
Every estimate is written, line-itemed, and in your hands before a single nail goes in. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the vent pulls loose or leaks inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No arguing about whose fault it was.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s one safe thing to check yourself: go into the attic on a bright day with the lights off and look for daylight coming through the ridge vent channel. If you see cracks, gaps, or actual beams of sunlight poking through, the vent is done. That diagnosis takes five minutes and tells us exactly what we’re dealing with.
What’s not safe is getting up on a Houston roof in July. Ridge vent replacement means working at the very top edge of the roof, often on a 6/12 or steeper pitch, while handling cap shingles and a long metal or plastic channel that catches wind like a sail. A fall from a ridge line is a hospital trip. The shingles up there are also baked hot enough to take skin off. We do the work with proper tie-offs and a second person on the ground. Call (254) 566-3573 and we’ll get you on the schedule. You’ll know the price before we touch the roof.
FAQs
Realistically, eight to twelve years, which is shorter than the manufacturer’s optimistic twenty-year spec because Houston’s UV intensity, attic heat, and humidity cycles age the plastic faster. If the vent was installed with the wrong fasteners or the shingles were sealed too close to the vent channel, that number can drop to five. Call (254) 566-3573 for an inspection if you suspect premature failure.
No. A crushed or cracked vent channel cannot be reliably patched, because the patch creates a high spot that lifts the cap shingles and makes the original leak worse. The only honest fix is removal and replacement of the vent run. A partial replacement works if the damage is confined to one section and the remaining vent material is still flexible, but most Houston homeowners with one cracked section have two or three more failing.
One crew, one day for most Houston homes. If the ridge board needs repair due to water damage, add half a day. We’ll tell you the timeline in the written estimate before any work starts.
We keep both CertainTeed Rapid Ridge and a quality aftermarket equivalent on the truck, so in most cases the work doesn’t wait on a supply order. If the home calls for a specific CertainTeed line we don’t have on hand, we source it same-week from our Houston suppliers. We also stock compatible parts for GAF and Owens Corning systems, in case your roof has a mixed history.
