CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a CertainTeed roof with failing underlayment or rotted decking, we stock CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and decking on our trucks, and most Houston repairs run between $450 and $1,800 installed depending on how many sheets of decking we have to replace and how much underlayment has to come up. We can typically get out to diagnose the problem the same day you call (254) 566-3573, and you’ll have a written price in your hands before we pull a single shingle.

Most Houston homeowners don’t discover this problem by climbing up to look. They find a water stain on the ceiling after a hard Gulf rain, or they notice granules in the gutter and call us out thinking they need shingles. Then we pull back a few courses and find the real story: underlayment that’s dried and cracked, or decking (the plywood or OSB layer under everything) that’s been soaking up moisture for years. The shingle was the symptom. The deck and underlayment were the disease.
Here’s the thing about CertainTeed systems in Houston specifically: the manufacturer warrants the shingles, but the underlayment and decking underneath take the real beating from our humidity, our thermal swings, and our storm cycles. This is the layer that actually keeps water out of your attic. If it’s compromised, a $14,000 CertainTeed shingle system is just decoration.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
The deck and underlayment layer isn’t specific to one CertainTeed shingle line, which is good news. Whether you’ve got Landmark, Landmark Pro, Presidential Shake, or Grand Manor on top, the repair approach is the same: we strip back the affected area, assess the decking, replace what’s bad, and lay new CertainTeed-compatible underlayment before reinstalling shingles. What does vary is the underlayment spec. CertainTeed’s DiamondDeck, RoofRunner, and WinterGuard lines each serve different roles, and matching the right one matters.
One compatibility gotcha we see a lot: certain CertainTeed shingle warranties require a specific underlayment to keep the warranty valid. If a previous contractor laid generic #15 felt under a Landmark Pro system, that’s technically a warranty break, and we’ll flag it during the estimate. We carry both CertainTeed OEM underlayment and quality aftermarket equivalents like GAF and Owens Corning products, but for warranty-sensitive repairs, OEM is the right call. Greg Holloway walks every CertainTeed repair job himself and checks the underlayment spec against the shingle line before the crew starts pulling shingles.
How to identify what you have: look in your attic first. If you can see the underside of the decking, check for stamps on the wood, but the underlayment itself won’t be visible from below. Your original contract or any leftover material from install is your best reference. If you don’t have that, we’ll identify it on site during the estimate, and we’ll show you what we’re seeing before we quote a dollar figure.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceilings or walls after rain. This is the number-one call we get in Houston’s Meyerland and Bellaire areas. By the time water shows up inside, the underlayment has usually been compromised for months, and the decking below it is likely soft or rotted. The stain is just the leak’s exit point, not its source.
- Spongy or sagging roof deck from the attic side. If you can push up on the decking between rafters and it flexes like a wet sponge, the wood is saturated. Houston’s humidity means decking that gets wet once often never fully dries. That flex is structural weakening, not a cosmetic issue.
- Shingle edges curling or lifting in patches, not uniformly. Uniform curling can be age or ventilation. Patchy lifting usually means the underlayment beneath has failed and the shingle’s adhesive bond is all that’s holding on. In Houston’s wind-driven rains, that bond is not enough.
- Granules in gutters paired with visible dark streaks on decking. Granule loss alone means shingle wear. But when we’re up there and see dark, waterlogged sections of decking peeking through, that’s an active moisture problem, and we’ll tell you it’s deck repair time, not just shingle time.
- Mold or mildew smell in the attic, especially after heavy rain. Trapped moisture in decking breeds mold fast in our climate. By the time you smell it, you’ve got a ventilation-and-moisture problem, and the decking under the affected area is almost certainly compromised.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a typical underlayment and deck repair on a CertainTeed system runs $450 to $1,800 installed. The $450 end is one sheet of decking replaced, a 4-foot-by-8-foot section of underlayment, shingle reinstallation, and cleanup. The $1,800 end is multiple sheets across a valley or around a chimney, full underlayment replacement on the affected plane, and re-flashing. Most jobs land between $750 and $1,200.

What drives the price: how many decking sheets are rotted beyond saving, whether we’re working around penetrations like vents or chimneys, and whether the underlayment needs to be replaced in a full width or just patched. We don’t patch underlayment where a full-width replacement is what will actually hold. Here’s what every estimate includes, in writing, before any work starts: the line-item price for materials, the labor, the disposal, and the warranty on our work. No change orders. No “we found more once we got up there.” If we find more, we walk down the ladder and talk to you before touching anything else.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: from inside the attic, look for water staining, soft decking, or light coming through the roof boards. From outside, binoculard the shingles for patchy lifting or missing tabs. That’ll tell you whether you need to make a call.
What you should not do: walk a roof without fall protection, pull up shingles, or attempt to replace decking or underlayment on a two-story Houston home. We’re not being dramatic. The work involves standing on a steeper pitch than it looks, removing fasteners, and handling materials that shift underfoot. Falls from residential roofs put people in the hospital every year. Our crew is trained, tied off, and insured for this work, and every technician on your roof is background-checked and uniformed. If you’ve spotted a sign of trouble, call (254) 566-3573 and we’ll come out, do the inspection, and give you a written price. You’ll know the price before we touch the roof.
FAQs
In Houston’s climate, underlayment and decking typically last 20 to 30 years when properly installed, which matches the life of the shingle above them. The decking can last longer if it never gets wet, but our humidity and storm cycles make that rare. Proper attic ventilation extends deck life dramatically.
If the underlayment is torn or punctured in a small area and the decking beneath is still solid, a targeted repair is often enough. But if the underlayment is cracked, brittle, or delaminating across a wider section, patching just moves the problem. In that case we’ll recommend full-width replacement on the affected roof plane, and we’ll show you why before we quote it.
Most Houston deck and underlayment repairs take one day from start to finish. The crew arrives, strips the area, replaces the decking and underlayment, reinstalls shingles, and cleans up before they leave. Larger jobs or repairs around complex roof geometry can stretch into a second day, and we’ll tell you the timeline in writing with the estimate.
We stock CertainTeed-compatible underlayment, roof decking, and fasteners on our trucks, along with materials from GAF and Owens Corning. That means on most repairs we start same-day. If your repair needs a specific CertainTeed underlayment spec to preserve the shingle warranty, we’ll confirm availability before we schedule, and you’ll know exactly when the crew will arrive. Call (254) 566-3573 for an exact quote, estimates are free.
