GAF Shingle Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

GAF shingle repair in Houston typically runs $350 – $850 for spot repairs and $1,200 – $2,400 for larger sections, with most jobs finished the same day we start. We stock GAF-compatible shingles on our trucks so we can match your existing roof without waiting on a special order. Most homeowners discover the problem after a storm rolls through and they spot granules in the gutter, a shingle flap lifting on one corner, or a small brown stain spreading across the ceiling. A single loose shingle doesn’t stay single for long in Houston, where a 70 mph wind gust can turn one lifted tab into a six-foot strip of exposed underlayment by morning.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF makes three main architectural lines you’ll find on Houston roofs: Timberline HDZ (the most common, with its distinctive shadow band), Timberline UHDZ (thicker, heavier), and Royal Sovereign (their 3-tab entry line, usually on older builds). Each line has different exposure widths, so a shingle from one line won’t line up cleanly with another. Timberline HDZ shingles measure 13¼ inches wide with a 5⅝-inch exposure. Royal Sovereign 3-tabs run 12 inches wide with a 5-inch exposure. You can check which line you have by looking at the GAF logo printed on the underside, or you can have Greg match it by checking the color and the shadow band profile. GAF runs superseded colors every few years, so a 2012 “Weathered Wood” isn’t the same as the 2024 version. We keep current colors on the truck and can source older runs through our suppliers, though discontinued colors sometimes mean blending rather than a perfect match.

Signs Your GAF Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout elbows. After 8 – 12 years of Houston sun and humidity, GAF shingles can shed their granule layer, exposing the asphalt beneath. You’ll see coarse sand in the gutter after rain and a patch of shingles that looks bald in spots.
  • One shingle lifted at a corner or edge. This usually means the sealant strip gave out or the shingle wasn’t pressed down firmly when installed. Wind gets under it, and then rain follows the same path into the decking.
  • Black streaks or moss on the shaded north slope. Houston’s humidity keeps roofs damp for long stretches, especially under oak canopies in neighborhoods like Garden Oaks or Timbergrove. Moss that grows under shingle edges can break the sealant bond.
  • Corner tabs cracked or missing entirely. After a hard Houston hailstorm, the corners of GAF shingles often crack before the rest of the shingle fails. You’ll see half-tab shapes on the ground under the drip line.
  • Ceiling stains that appear a day or two after heavy rain. That’s water that got past a failed shingle and found its way through the decking. By the time it shows inside, you’ve had a leak for a while, and the rotted decking underneath is usually worse than the shingle itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a GAF shingle repair in Houston, expect $350 – $850 for a small section (up to about 50 square feet), covering the shingles, felt or synthetic underlayment where needed, nails, and labor. Larger repairs that involve decking replacement climb to $1,200 – $2,400 because rotted plywood or OSB has to come out and go back in before the GAF shingles can be laid. A couple of factors move the price: how steep the roof is, how far we are from the truck, and whether the crew has to tear off multiple failed layers first. Every estimate is written line-by-line and handed to you before work starts, so you’ll know exactly what’s included and what isn’t. And every repair carries our written guarantee and the 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the fix fails inside a year, we return and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your GAF shingles from the ground or a ladder set on stable ground. Look for cracked corners, missing tabs, lifted edges, and large bare spots. If you spot a problem, the next step is usually where DIY goes wrong. Walking a Houston roof means knowing how to distribute weight on a 3:12 slope in 95-degree heat, and a wrong step can crack a shingle that was fine before you got up there. We’ve seen homeowners use roofing cement to “glue down” a lifted GAF shingle, then have the corner peel back six months later because cement is not a substitute for the factory sealant. That’s why we say call (254) 566-3573. You’ll know the price before we touch the roof.
