IKO Ridge Vent Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock and install IKO-compatible ridge vent on a regular basis, and most Houston homes run between $900 and $1,600 installed for a full ridge vent replacement, depending on ridge length and access. If you’re calling because your current ridge vent is cracked, lifting, leaking, or missing sections after a storm, the fix usually takes one day once we’re on the roof. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling near an exterior wall, granules in the gutter, or a vent section that’s simply gone after a spring storm rolls through the Meyerland area.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO makes a handful of ridge vent lines, and the one we see most often in Houston is the IKO Armourvent Multi or Armourvent Standard. The Multi version is a hinged, roll-out vent that flexes to fit most roof pitches from 3:12 up to 16:12, which covers nearly every suburban ranch and two-story in this market. The Standard version is a rigid, less flexible panel that costs less but doesn’t hug the ridge line as cleanly on steeper roofs. If you still have the original packaging or can read the printed logo on a surviving section, that’s the fastest way to know what you’ve got. Otherwise, Greg Holloway or one of our techs can identify it from the profile and the way it’s fastened. One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: IKO’s hinged vents are designed to work with IKO’s own Hip & Ridge shingles for the cap, and mixing a competitor’s cap shingle over an IKO vent base can void the manufacturer’s wind warranty on the vent. Tilehurst Roofing Houston is an independent roofing contractor, not affiliated with IKO, but we install their vent products to the manufacturer’s spec so the warranty stays intact. For aftermarket equivalents, we generally recommend staying with the IKO vent rather than a generic roll vent if the rest of the roof is IKO, because the vent’s profile and nail line are matched to their cap shingle dimensions. We also stock and install ridge vent from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed, so if you’re not married to the IKO brand, we’ll show you what each option costs in writing before any work begins.

Signs Your IKO Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

Ridge vents don’t fail loudly, but they do leave clear clues. Here’s what we see on Houston roofs:

  • Cracked or brittle vent sections. Houston’s UV load is brutal; after 8 to 12 years, the plastic or foam baffle in an IKO vent can get so dry it snaps along the hinge. Once it cracks, the vent stops holding its shape and can’t keep rain from blowing in during a storm.
  • Water staining near exterior walls or at the ceiling. This is often misread as a shingle leak, but a failed ridge vent lets wind-driven rain enter at the peak and run down the rafters. The stain usually shows up on the ceiling a few feet in from the wall, not directly under a plumbing fixture.
  • Lifted or missing vent sections after a storm. A ridge vent that wasn’t nailed to the manufacturer’s pattern can peel up in 40 mph gusts. We see this all over the Meyerland corridor after spring squall lines come through, and a missing section leaves an open slot at the peak of your roof.
  • Visible daylight or a sagging ridge line from the attic. If you’re in the attic during the day and see light coming through at the peak where the vent should be seated, the vent has shifted. A sagging ridge is a structural warning sign, not a vent problem, and that deserves a professional look immediately.
  • Attic temp spikes in summer. A working ridge vent pulls hot air out of the attic constantly. When it fails, the attic can jump 15 to 20 degrees in June, your AC runs longer, and your shingles age faster from the inside out.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Houston single-story home with 30 to 50 linear feet of ridge, a full IKO ridge vent replacement runs $900 to $1,300 installed. A two-story home with more ridge line, steeper access, or a lot of cap shingle replacement can push that to $1,600 or a bit more. The job includes removing the old vent, inspecting the decking and existing cap shingles, installing the new IKO vent to the manufacturer’s nail pattern, and replacing or re-seating the hip and ridge cap shingles over the vent. You’ll know the price before we touch the roof; Greg Holloway writes up every ridge vent replacement as a fixed, line-item price, and we don’t change the number at the door. Every repair is covered by our written guarantee, and if the vent fails or leaks inside the guarantee period, our crew returns to correct it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do is check your attic for daylight at the peak after a storm, and from the ground you can use binoculars to look for missing or lifted vent sections. What you shouldn’t do is get on the roof yourself; a ridge vent sits at the highest point of the house and the fall risk is real, especially with Houston’s morning dew making shingles slick. We’ve also seen plenty of DIY ridge vent installs fail because the homeowner nailed through the hinge or skipped the manufacturer’s required nail spacing, which lets the vent flutter and tear in the next storm.
