Owens Corning Shingle Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Owens Corning shingle repair in Houston typically runs $275 to $675 for the most common failures – ridge cap blow-offs, cracked field shingles, and nail pops along the eaves – and we stock the matching colors and profiles on our trucks so the repair can usually happen in one trip. The call usually starts the same way: a homeowner finds shingle granules in the gutter after a spring storm, or a neighbor points out a dark patch on the roof that wasn’t there last month. By the time we walk the roof, the problem is rarely just one shingle – Houston’s heat, humidity, and the occasional Gulf Coast squall work on the whole section together.

What you’re dealing with is usually not a manufacturing defect. Owens Corning shingles are good products. But everything on a Houston roof ages faster than the warranty tables assume – the asphalt oxidizes in hundred-degree attic heat, the sealant strips lose their grip, and a 60-mph gust finds the weak point. Our job is to match the repair to your specific Owens Corning line – Duration, Oakridge, TruDefinition, Berkshire – so the fix blends and holds for years, not months.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
We repair every Owens Corning architectural and three-tab line you’re likely to have on a Houston home: Duration, Duration FLEX, Oakridge, TruDefinition Duration, TruDefinition Oakridge, Berkshire, and Woodmoor. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss is that color matters more than series. Owens Corning makes over 15 colorways, and a shingle that’s labeled “Driftwood” from one plant in one production year can weather differently from the same color name made three years later. That’s why we don’t just match the product line – we pull a shingle sample and match it against current stock before we commit to a price.
If you have the original bundle wrapper or the roof’s installation paperwork, the shingle code is printed right on it. If you don’t, we identify it on site. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for field shingle replacement, we use genuine Owens Corning where the match demands it, because aftermarket equivalents in the same color often have a different granule blend that shows from the street. For accessories – ridge cap, hip shingles, starter strips – Owens Corning’s own accessory line is the right call because the sealant chemistry is designed to work together. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Owens Corning, so our loyalty is to the roof in front of us, not to one brand.

Signs Your Owens Corning Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granule loss in the gutters or downspout elbows. Houston’s heat accelerates granule shedding once shingles pass the ten-year mark. It looks like coarse black sand, and it means the asphalt layer is starting to weather and thin.
- Curling corners or fish-mouthing at the edges. Moisture gets under the shingle from below, usually in poorly vented attics. The edges lift and curl, and the next big wind tears them off.
- Wind-blown shingles after a named storm. The sealant strips that bond the shingle overlap lose adhesion after years of thermal cycling. When one shingle goes, the two on either side of it are usually loose too.
- Nail pops – small raised bumps with exposed nail heads. Decking expands and contracts through Houston’s humid summers and dry winters, and it pushes fasteners upward. The shingle around the pop splits, then leaks.
- Dark streaks or moss at the north slope or under tree cover. The blue-green algae that feeds on limestone filler in the shingles is common in Humble, Kingwood, and other heavily treed areas near the bayous. By itself it’s cosmetic, but the trapped moisture underneath it shortens shingle life.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Owens Corning shingle repair in Houston, you’re looking at $275 to $675 installed. A single cracked shingle swap sits at the bottom of that range. A bundle or two of field shingles with new underlayment and ridge cap sits at the top. If we find rotted decking underneath, that’s an extra cost we’ll show you in writing before we touch it – and we’ll include a photo of what we found.
The price always includes the shingles, the matching underlayment, the labor, cleanup, and a written line-item breakdown before any work starts. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails. Every repair gets our written guarantee, and if it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back under the 365-Day Done Right Promise at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do is look and document. Take photos from a ladder at the gutter line, not from the roof surface. Check for shingles in the yard after storms. Measure the exposed shingle width with a tape measure from the ladder so we know the reveal before we climb up. That’s useful and safe.
What we don’t recommend is walking a Houston roof in August to do a shingle swap yourself. The asphalt gets soft and slick above about a hundred degrees – and steep-slope falls on a 8:12 or steeper roof are the reason roofers carry fall-protection gear every day. If your repair area is within reach of a ladder and you’re experienced, a single shingle replacement is doable. Most people are better off making one phone call, and Greg Holloway still walks every job himself before we write the price. You’ll know the price before we touch the roof. FAQs
Duration and Oakridge lines are warrantied for 30 to 50 years, but in Houston’s climate the functional life before you need repair work is closer to 15 to 22 years – heat, humidity, and storm cycles are harder on the sealant strips than the manufacturer’s test chambers assume. Our repair work is guaranteed in writing regardless of shingle age. Call (254) 566-3573 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your roof is in repair range or replacement range.
Yes, if the decking underneath is sound and the failure is localized – we match the shingle series and colorway, replace the damaged area, and blend the repair into the field. The repair carries the same written guarantee as a full project. If the roof has failed in five places and three more are soft, we’ll tell you that too, and show you the price for both options before you choose.
Most single-area repairs take two to four hours from setup to final cleanup, assuming the decking is intact and the weather holds. We’ll give you a firm arrival window when you book, and a live person answers our phone 24/7 – no voicemail, no waiting until Monday.
We stock the common Houston colorways – Driftwood, Estate Gray, Onyx Black, Brownwood, and Shasta White – on our trucks and in our local yard. For less common colors or discontinued runs, we source directly from regional distributors weekly. If you need a match we don’t have on the truck, we’ll tell you the lead time honestly and bring a sample in the meantime.
No. The written price you approve before we start is the price you pay unless we find hidden rot or structural damage – and if we do, we stop, take photos, show you exactly what we found, and give you a new written price before any additional work proceeds. No change orders by surprise.
